    Grilled herb turkey kabobs

These grilled herb turkey kabobs are full of flavour from a tasty but simple to make marinade, and a fun recipe for summer BBQs or indoor grilling. A family-friendly recipe that is a real crowd-pleaser!

There's something about kabobs (or kebabs or skewers as they also known - never quite figured out the difference!) that is quite fun, and particularly for summer. If your family loves them too then you may also like to see my pesto chicken skewers and coconut chicken skewers. Both tasty and suitable for kids and adults alike.

These grilled turkey skewers are flavourful from herbs and a touch of honey, and show that turkey doesn't just have to be for Christmas, Thanksgiving or holiday meals! They can be enjoyed in the summer sunshine for outdoor BBQs or if the weather isn't isn't being too kind, then for indoor grilling too.

Why this recipe is so good

Delicious herb marinade. Fresh herbs and honey combine perfectly for lots of flavour, and can easily be adjusted for even more herby flavour if you like!

Enjoy year-round. These kabobs can be grilled indoors or outdoors.

Easy to make. A super simple marinade provides lots of flavour, and then the skewers are very easy to put together.

    Ingredients

all the ingredients for turkey kabobs.

Some notes on a few of the ingredients. See the recipe card below for the full list and their quantities!

    • Turkey breast fillets - choose good quality fillets and then dice into smaller pieces suitable for kabobs.
    • Herbs - you can use those you prefer. Personally I like fresh coriander and mint, but I know the former isn't always a favourite of some! Parsley would also be nice.
    • Apple cider vinegar - this adds a tang to the marinade. My low histamine readers may wish to use white distilled vinegar instead, or leave out entirely.

    Variations to the recipe

Maple syrup in place of honey. If you prefer not to use honey, this can be swapped out for maple syrup.

Herbs of choice. I like to use coriander and mint, but use the fresh herbs you like best!

Swap turkey for chicken. While this recipe uses turkey, you can always use chicken instead. I suggest dicing chicken breast into bite-size pieces.

    Step by step instructions

Making these grilled turkey kabobs really couldn't be more simple. Just a little hands-on prep time, then the grill does the work for you. Don't forget to prepare some sides too!

turkey pieces marinating in a glass dish.

    Steps 1 & 2

    1. Prepare the marinade by combining the herbs, honey, vinegar and olive oil. Give it a good stir.

    2. After dicing the turkey add it to the marinade and stir so all the turkey is coated.

Recipe tip: make the marinade in the dish you are using to let the turkey marinate in (if so doing) to save on washing up!

    Step 3

Thread the turkey onto the skewers, including fresh bell pepper and zucchini, or other vegetables. Bake on a lined baking tray if grilling indoors, or on a BBQ if outdoors. Check for an internal temperature of 165F and then serve with sides of your choice.

    Frequently asked questions

Can I use chicken instead of turkey?

    Yes, chicken also works well!

How long should I marinate the turkey for?

If you are a low histamine reader than you may wish to skip this stage altogether. If not, then I suggest around two hours.

How do I check turkey is cooked through?

Use a meat thermometer and check for an internal temperature of 165F at the deepest part of the turkey.

    How to prepare wooden skewers

Wooden skewers need to be soaked in water for at least 30 minutes before use to help prevent burning on the grill. You don't need to soak metal skewers.

    Equipment needed

Skewers - you can use either metal skewers or wooden / bamboo skewers. See above if using the latter!

Knife or scissors - to dice / slice the turkey and vegetables.

Grill - to, you know, grill!!

What to serve with turkey kabobs

As well as a simple green salad and rice, some other suggestions for sides to enjoy at your BBQs.

    • Broccolini slaw
    • Roasted vegetable pasta salad
    • Sweet potato wedges with paprika
    • Apple radish salad

Time to marinate (optional) 2 hrs
Total Time 2 hrs 40 mins
    Course Dinner, Party food
    Cuisine American, British
    Servings 4 kabobs

    Ingredients

    • 1 lb turkey breast fillets diced into bite-size pieces
    • 1 red bell pepper diced into chunks
    • ½ zucchini diced into chunks

    For the marinade

    • 3 tablespoon olive oil
    • 2 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
    • 4 tablespoon fresh herbs diced, tightly packed
    • 2 garlic cloves minced, optional
    • 1 tablespoon honey
    • pinch salt
    • pinch black pepper optional

    Instructions

    • Make the marinade by combining the ingredients in a container or bowl that can be sealed. Stir well.
    • Add the diced turkey to the container and stir well to coat in the marinade. Set aside in the fridge for up to two hours (optional).
    • Preheat the grill and line a baking tray with parchment paper. Thread the turkey and vegetables onto your skewers. Grill for 20 minutes or until the turkey is cooked through with an internal temperature of 165F. Cook time will vary depending upon the size of the turkey pieces and/or, if you are grilling outdoors, the temperature of your BBQ.

    Notes

    • Adjust the amount of herbs to taste. You can always add more for extra 'herby' flavour.
    • Cut the turkey into roughly similar size pieces so they cook evenly.
    • My low histamine readers may wish to cook the kabobs straight away, rather than leaving them to marinate.

Hi, I’m Claire. After a diagnosis of MCAS I began to follow a low histamine diet, which has helped me manage my symptoms. Here I hope to show that a restrictive diet can still be full of flavourful meals, and help you enjoy being creative in the kitchen.
