What are No Tomato Pasta Sauces?
No tomato pasta sauces are just that, pasta sauces that don't include tomatoes! So many homemade and store bought pasta sauces focus on tomatoes, including marinara sauces, bolognese, arrabbiata and more. It's quite the tomato experience to go to an Italian restaurant don't you find?!
But there are so many pasta sauce recipes without tomatoes to enjoy, with tasty ideas including fresh cheese, lots of vegetables, pesto and creamy sauces with tahini and vegetables. So let's liven up our dinner recipes and include some easy no tomato sauces for pasta night!
Why May You Like a Pasta Sauce without Tomatoes?
There are quite a few reasons why you may prefer to leave out tomatoes in your meals. Perhaps you simply don't like the taste of tomatoes, or good quality fresh tomatoes are hard to find in your area in the winter months.
It's also the case that people are allergic to tomatoes, or have to avoid them as they are a high histamine food (per the SIGHI list). This need to stick to low histamine meals and snacks may due to living with mast cell activation syndrome, histamine intolerance, urticaria or eczema.
Just a note to my low histamine readers that this is a broad informational post and may contain recipes with higher histamine foods. I have made every effort to choose recipes that are either low histamine as they are, or can be easily adapted with some food swaps to fit the diet.
Types of Sauces for Pasta without Tomato
There are so many options if you are looking for pasta recipes without tomato sauce, from nomato sauces to pesto, and healthy vegetable options too:
Nomato sauces - nomato sauces combine tasty ingredients such as roasted red bell peppers and beets to cook up a 'faux' tomato sauce with similar flavors and even the same red color!
Cheesy sauces - always a comfort food classic, choose from recipes using fresh cheeses such as ricotta, mozzarella and cream cheese.
Creamy sauces - find lots of different ideas, such as cauliflower alfredo, tahini sauce and butternut squash sauce.
Green vegetables sauces - let's get some leafy greens and vegetables into our meals, with kale, broccoli and mixed green pasta sauces!
Pesto sauces - pesto is a classic tomato free sauce for pasta and so full of flavor. You can find some fun alternatives here including my red pepper pesto pasta, artichoke pesto pasta and broccoli pesto pasta, which are both pasta sauces without tomatoes or dairy.
