This blueberry slushie is fun, fruity and so refreshing for summer drinks! It combines frozen fruits and pantry staples, and takes minutes to prepare.

Much like my peach slushie, this recipe is a grown up version of the fruit slushies I used to beg my mum to buy me when I was kid, but that had less than great ingredients!

Instead of more dubious ingredients, this blueberry slushie is simply made with frozen blueberries, apple juice and a little maple syrup, if you like. Both adult and kid-friendly, it's been on repeat in my home during all the heatwaves this year!

Ingredients

individually labelled frozen blueberries, apple juice and maple syrup.

All the ingredients and their quantities are set out in the recipe card below.

Some notes on a few of them:

  • Blueberries - we use frozen blueberries for this recipe as they will blend up to become an icy, thick slushie texture along with the juice.
  • Apple juice - you can either use store-bought if that works for you, or use a homemade juice. You could also use my pear apple juice recipe rather than just apple, to add in some more fruity flavor! Using apple juice rather than orange juice, means it's a citrus free slush recipe.

How to Make Blueberry Slushies

All you need to make this blueberry drink is freezer and pantry staples, and a high-powered blender. A fun straw is required in my home too hehe!

All the instructions are in the recipe card below, but these step by step photos should help guide you.

frozen blueberries, apple juice and maple syrup in a blender cup labelled number one.

Step 1: Combine berries and juice

Tip the frozen blueberries into a blender cup, and pour in the apple juice and maple syrup (image 1).

Step 2: Blend!

Blend up the berry slushie so that it has a fairly thick, but liquid consistency. You can adjust by adding more frozen blueberries to thicken and more apple juice to thin, to preference (image 2).

Recipe Tips and Notes

  • Change up the texture. Slushies can be thicker or thinner to preference. So use more liquid for a looser consistency if you like.
  • High-powered blender required! We're blending frozen fruit, so you need a blender that is up to the task.
  • Add other berries. For some variation, I like to add a little handful of frozen blackberries, or a spoonful of redcurrants if I have them to hand.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use fresh blueberries?

It's much better to use frozen blueberries as they give you the icy, thick slushie taste and texture, which fresh blueberries will not.

Can you prep a blueberry slushie drink ahead of time?

It's not a good idea to make ahead of time as it will gradually melt and become more liquid in the heat.

Can I add lemon or lime juice?

You can easily add lemon or lime juice to the blueberry slush, but this likely isn't suitable for low histamine readers.

  • apple juice isn't specifically mentioned, so if sensitive to store-bought then I would suggest to juice fresh apples.

Hi, I’m Claire. After a diagnosis of MCAS I began to follow a low histamine diet, which has helped me manage my symptoms. Here I hope to show that a restrictive diet can still be full of flavourful meals, and help you enjoy being creative in the kitchen.
