This mulled apple juice is fun, festive and fragrant with spices you probably already have in the pantry! Made in less than 30 minutes, it's so easy to make this spiced apple drink on the stovetop to enjoy with friends and family.

Festive drinks always feel warming and cozy, and this mulled apple juice joins my cardamom milk and nutmeg milk in making the most of fragrant seasonal spices.
While many mulled apple cider recipes use orange or lemon slices, I've made this recipe citrus free so it's more suitable for my low histamine readers. We add pomegranate juice instead to add a little tartness to the mulled drink.

Ingredients

All the ingredients and their quantities are set out in the recipe card below.
Some notes on a few of them:
- Apple juice - if store bought apple juice isn't for you, then you can use freshly juiced apples. I would suggest to use red apples for sweetness rather than tart green apples. My US readers can also use apple cider to make the mulled drink!
- Pomegranate juice - to add a note of tartness.
- Root ginger - make sure to peel the ginger first using a small spoon to scrape off the skin.
- Cloves and cardamom - both add a nice festive spiced flavor!
How to Make Mulled Apple Juice
It's very easy to make warm apple juice and add spices for a fragrant mulled drink for Christmas and holiday celebrations. All you need is a large pot to lightly simmer the juices and a ladle to spoon into your serving glasses.
All the instructions are in the recipe card below, but these step by step photos should help guide you.

Step 1: Combine ingredients
Pour the apple juice, pomegranate juice and maple syrup into a large pot, then add the ginger slices, cloves and cardamom (image 1). Stir well to infuse the spices into the juice.

Step 2: Mull the apple juice!
Heat the apple juice mixture so it comes almost to a simmer, then reduce the heat a touch and heat for 20 minutes (image 2). Ladle into your serving glasses or mugs.
Recipe Tips and Notes
- This hot apple juice is very adaptable to personal taste, so you can easily leave out any of the spices or do all apple juice and leave out the pomegranate if you prefer.
- Many mulled drinks include cinnamon, and if it works for you, adding a cinnamon stick to the pot gives a nice flavor (note that cinnamon is debated in terms of histamine level).
- I find that the spices tend to sink to the bottom of the pot, so give it a good stir before ladling into your glasses.
- Make sure your serving glasses are suitable for hot liquids!

📖 Recipe

Mulled Apple Juice
Equipment
- Dutch oven or large pot
Ingredients
- 5 cups apple juice or apple cider
- ¼ cup pomegranate juice
- 5 slices root ginger peeled
- 4 cloves
- 1 teaspoon cardamom
- 1 tablespoon maple syrup
Instructions
- Pour the apple juice and pomegranate juice into a large pot. Add in the peeled slices of root ginger, cloves, cardamom and maple syrup. Slices of fresh apple can also be added to the pot. Stir well.
- Turn up the heat so the apple juice mixture gets hot, and is just under a simmer. Reduce the heat to low to medium and heat for 20 minutes.
- Ladle into your serving glasses or mugs and enjoy!
Notes
- If you are sensitive to bottled juices, I suggest to juice the apples and make pomegranate juice yourself. Pomegranate juice can be made be blending the seeds for a few moments, then straining through a fine mesh sieve to remove the hard seed.
- Adjust the amount of spice and maple syrup to taste preference.
- Nutritional information is auto-generated and should be understood to be an estimate.
- ginger, which scores 1.
- cloves score 0, with a note 'Small amounts are well tolerated, for larger quantities lack of experience'.
