This fall fruit salad combines deliciously sweet red apples, juicy berries and pomegranate seeds. It's so quick and easy to make as a fresh colorful breakfast or dessert and tossed with a flavorful pomegranate juice dressing to keep it citrus free.

Whether you call it a fall fruit salad or an autumn fruit salad, I think you'll love the simplicity of this light dessert or side dish! We combine seasonal fruits and berries (and add some blueberries in too, because they're always delicious and easy to find).
It's made as a fruit salad without orange juice or citrus, and we use low histamine fruits and berries to make it suitable for those readers. Orange juice is swapped out for pomegranate juice, and if you like a little pinch of spice, cardamom is so good.
Enjoy this autumn fruit salad as a topping for many of my breakfast recipes such as my blended chia pudding, oat milk chia pudding and chia hemp pudding!

🍎 Ingredients

All the ingredients and their quantities are set out in the recipe card below.
Some notes on a few of them:
- Red apples - I like to use Gala apples, but you can use any crisp sweet red apple that's in season including Honeycrisp, Fuji or Pink Lady apples.
- Blueberries and blackberries - to give delicious sweetness, you can serve them whole rather than needing to dice them.
- Pomegranate juice - you can either use pomegranate juice from the store if that works for you, or make it fresh yourself.
🔪 How to Make Pomegranate Juice
If you wish to use fresh pomegranate juice, simply add pomegranate seeds (also known as arils) to a blender. Blend for a few seconds, then strain the juice through a fine mesh sieve into a bowl or jug and discard the seeds.
🫐 How to Make Fall Fruit Salad
It's very easy to make this fresh fruit salad for the fall or autumn months, and there's no need for any fancy kitchen equipment. Just grab your fresh fruit, juice, spice and a serving bowl!
All the instructions are set out in the recipe card below, but these step by step photos should help guide you.

Step 1: Make the fruit dressing
Whisk together pomegranate juice, maple syrup and cardamom, if using (image 1).

Step 2: Combine the fruits and berries
Add the blackberries, blueberries and pomegranate seeds to a large serving bowl (image 2).

Step 3: Drizzle on the dressing
Pour half the dressing over the berries and toss to combine (image 3).

Step 4: Add the apple
De-core and slice the apples. Do this right before serving so they don't brown. Add to the bowl, then drizzle over the rest of the fruit juice. Toss to coat and serve immediately (image 4).
💭 Recipe Tips and Notes
- Cut apples brown quite quickly, so unless you are soaking them in lemon juice (likely not suitable for low histamine readers) it's best to slice them right before serving. Alternatively, you can leave out the apples and swap for other fruits.
- Use fresh, ripe seasonal produce for their delicious sweetness. Your berries should be plump, with no wrinkling on the skins.
- I like to dice the apples into slices, but you can also dice into cubes the same size as the berries if you prefer.

📋 Frequently Asked Questions
I don't recommend using frozen fruit as it will release a lot of liquid as it thaws.
Persimmon would give a nice orange addition to the salad, and pears are in season too.
Of course, pumpkin seeds, macadamia nuts or pistachios would all give a good crunch!
Fruit salad is so versatile, and you can serve it as a light dessert, perhaps for Thanksgiving or holiday celebrations, or with breakfast or lunch!

📖 Recipe

Fall Fruit Salad
Equipment
- Apple de-corer
Ingredients
- 2 red apples de-cored, sliced
- 1 cup blackberries
- 1 cup blueberries
- ¼ cup pomegranate seeds
- 3 tablespoon pomegranate juice
- 1 teaspoon maple syrup
- ¼ teaspoon cardamom or cinnamon, optional
Instructions
- Whisk together the pomegranate juice, maple syrup and cardamom (or cinnamon), if using.
- Tip the blueberries, blackberries and pomegranate seeds (arils) into your serving bowl. Pour over half the pomegranate dressing and toss to coat the fruit. Right before serving, prep the apples by de-coring and slicing, then add to the bowl. Pour over the remaining fruit dressing and toss to combine.
- This fall fruit salad is best eaten straight away, as the apples will brown over time.
Notes
- As this is a fruit salad without orange juice, lemon juice or citrus, I suggest to prep the apple right before serving so that it doesn't brown. If lemon juice does work for you (likely not low histamine readers), this can help prevent browning.
- While blueberries are typically available year-round, they are more in season late summer so can be swapped for more apple or blackberries if you can't find in stores.
- Nutritional information is auto-generated and should be understood to be an estimate.
- if store-bought pomegranate juice doesn't work for you, then you can blend fresh pomegranate seeds in a blender then strain the juice through a fine mesh sieve.
- cardamom, which scores 0 but has a note, in French, that some varieties may not be well tolerated. Cinnamon scores 0, but is higher on other lists.
