This cottage cheese and honey dip is perfect as a sweet fruit dip for summer parties and gatherings! Quick and easy to make, it uses minimal ingredients and comes together in just five minutes.

Love all things cottage cheese? Do have a peek at my cottage cheese toasts and savory cottage cheese bowl for fun breakfast, lunch or snack ideas that are so simple yet delicious!

cottage cheese and honey dip in a cream bowl with raspberries and blueberries with a blueberry on a stick dipped in, next to a bowl of honey.

Cottage cheese is having quite a 'moment' as a high protein and very tasty cheese to use in so many ways. More typically used a savory ingredient, such as in my cottage cheese tzatziki and cottage cheese and dill dip, it's a creamy fresh cheese that's perfect for making appetizers and snacks.

But, similarly to my cottage cheese fruit smoothie, we can also make a delicious sweet cottage cheese with honey dip by combining it with a sweetener, spices and a little vanilla extract. All add sweetness to this light whipped cheese and it's perfect as a cottage cheese fruit dip served with fresh apple slices or berries.

⭐ Why this recipe is so good

Light and fresh. Just like my mascarpone dip, we make this yogurt free fruit dip with just a few ingredients. Then we (optionally) whip the cottage cheese to make it so light.

Versatile. As well as enjoying as a dip, we can use as a cottage cheese spread on toast or crackers as a breakfast or lunch idea.

Quick and easy. We use just a few pantry staples to jazz up the cheese, and it takes minutes to blend up your dip!

🍯 Ingredients

individually labelled cottage cheese, vanilla extract, honey, cinnamon and cardamom.

All the ingredients and their quantities are set out in the recipe card below.

  • Cottage cheese - I suggest to choose a plain, unflavored cheese rather than one that already contains fruit, herbs or spices.
  • Cinnamon and cardamom - these spices add a lot of flavor, and are typically pantry staples for many of us!
  • Honey - I suggest to use runny honey rather than set honey.

📖 Swaps and variations

Leave out the cinnamon. If you're looking for low histamine diet recipes, you may like to use just cardamom. Cinnamon is debated in terms of histamine and seems quite individual in terms of being tolerated.

Swap honey for maple syrup. Both work well as a sweetener.

Add a drizzle of syrup. For a lovely fruity flavor, a little drizzle of my lychee syrup would be delicious!

🔪 Step by step instructions

Making this cottage cheese and honey recipe is very simple, with just a few steps. All the instructions are in the recipe card below, but these photos should help guide you.

Step 3: Whip the cottage cheese

Optional: for a smoother consistency, blend the cottage cheese in a blender or food processor until smooth (image 3).

Step 4: Prepare the dip

Spoon the cottage cheese and honey dip into your serving bowl and drizzle on more honey to preference (image 4).

💭 Recipe tips and notes

  • Use a plain, unflavored cottage cheese that does not already have fruit, herbs or other ingredients added to it.
  • Blending is optional - if you like a more chunky consistency then simply stir in the spices, honey and vanilla extract.
  • If using a food processor to blend you may need to scrape the sides down with a spatula.

📋 Frequently asked questions

What does cottage cheese taste like?

Cottage cheese is light and creamy, with a slightly sour salty taste.

How do you sweeten cottage cheese?

It's easy to sweeten cottage cheese with honey, maple syrup or agave nectar. Or you can add fruit, such as in my cottage cheese and apple bowl!

Is cottage cheese a sweet or savory ingredient?

Cottage cheese can be used in both sweet and savory dishes. Add savory ingredients such as herbs for a savory flavor, or fruit, spices and sweeteners such as honey or maple syrup for a sweet dish.

Is cottage cheese low histamine?

Cottage cheese isn't rated on the SIGHI list, but is stated to be well tolerated on their histamine potential of food page, as long as it does not have incompatible additives.

🍽 How to serve cottage cheese and honey

  • Serve with fruit or fruit kabobs as a fun cottage cheese fruit dip.
  • Top with my baked persimmon or grilled peaches with honey for a sweet dessert!
  • Scoop up your dip with my seed crackers or other sweet crackers.
  • Spread onto toast or crackers for breakfast or as a snack. Pairing with my fresh cherry compote or mango coulis would give a lovely fruity flavor!

I’m confused by done of the ingredients in all of these recipes. My list of Do Not eat high histamine foods include cinnamon, blueberries and a few other ingredients you have in your recipes

Hi Teresa, my recipes largely follow the SIGHI list for histamine which has blueberries and cinnamon (although that is highly debated, as I have noted in the recipe card of this post) as low histamine. I typically give the 'score' of ingredients from the SIGHI list at the bottom of each recipe. However, you should always follow the advice of your doctor or dietician as to the foods that are suitable for you and your health circumstances.

Hi, I’m Claire. After a diagnosis of MCAS I began to follow a low histamine diet, which has helped me manage my symptoms. Here I hope to show that a restrictive diet can still be full of flavourful meals, and help you enjoy being creative in the kitchen.
