⭐ Why this recipe is so good

So creamy! The combination of cheeses gives all that creamy cheesy goodness.

Yogurt free bell pepper dip. We use fresh cheeses for this yogurt free dip, making it a low histamine recipe, and for those not keen on the yogurt flavor.

Lightly spiced. We use sweet paprika that gives a hint of spice - perfect for a flavorful dip!

Quick and easy summer dip! After roasting your red bell peppers and garlic, simply blend up your dip ingredients in minutes.

🌶 Ingredients

individually labelled cream cheese, paprika, red bell pepper, garlic and cottage cheese.

All the ingredients and their quantities are set out in the recipe card below.

Some notes on a few of them:

  • Paprika - I suggest to use Hungarian sweet paprika for this recipe for its delicious fruity flavor.
  • Cottage cheese - this thickens the dip and works as a swap for Greek yogurt that is often used to make dips. Choose a plain unflavored cheese.
  • Bell peppers - I suggest to use red peppers for that delicious roasted sweetness as well as their pretty color!

📖 Swaps and variations

Swap sweet paprika for paprika or smoked paprika. If you are using regular hot paprika or smoked paprika, I suggest to use about ¼ teaspoon and have a taste test. Then add a little more to taste. My low histamine readers will likely to wish to stick with sweet paprika.

Leave out the cream cheese. I like the addition of the extra cheese flavor, but you can do all cottage cheese if you prefer.

Up the garlic! Love a really garlicky dip? Add another clove or two!

🔪 Step by step instructions

Making this paprika dip is very simple, with just a few steps. There's very little preparation and then we blend this yogurt free dip in just a minute or two!

The full instructions are in the recipe card below, but these photos should help guide you.

roasted red bell peppers and garlic cloves on a baking tray labelled number one.

Step 1: Roast peppers and garlic

Dice a red bell pepper, drizzle with a little olive oil and roast for 15 minutes. Add two garlic cloves (skins on) to the baking tray, then roast for a further 15 minutes (image 1).

Set aside to cool, then remove the garlic from their skins.

Step 2: Blend the dip!

Add cottage cheese, cream cheese, roasted bell pepper, garlic cloves, paprika, salt and black pepper to a blender. Blend to a creamy paprika dip, adding more paprika to taste preference (image 2).

Serve with chips and crudites!

💭 Expert recipe tips and notes

  • I suggest using a red bell pepper as they have more sweetness than green peppers when you roast them in the oven. Also gives a better color to the dip I think!
  • Add the garlic into the oven once the peppers have already had 15 minutes of cook time. If you add them together, the garlic will overcook.
  • Use plain unflavored cottage cheese and cream cheese.
  • For extra flavor, you can always add more sweet paprika if you like!
  • If you use hot or smoked paprika, then I suggest to reduce the quantity, blend the dip and have a taste test. Adjust to taste with more spice if you like.

📋 Frequently asked questions

Sweet paprika is a type of paprika 'typically ground only from the flesh of the pepper without including its seeds' (Institute of Culinary Education). It has a very mild flavor, with an earthiness.

Which type of paprika to use for paprika dip?

You can use sweet paprika (as in this recipe) or regular hot or smoked paprika to make a paprika dip.

Which type of pepper is best to make a roasted pepper dip?

Red bell peppers are a good choice for dips as they have a lovely sweetness when roasted in the oven.

🍽 How to serve your paprika dip

  • Serve with chips, pita chips or tortillas to scoop up all the tastiness of this flavorful sweet paprika dip, or perhaps my chia seed crackers or quinoa crackers as gluten free options.
  • Prefer a more healthy option? Use bell pepper scoops, celery or carrot sticks instead.
  • Enjoy as a dipping sauce for sweet potato wedges or my shredded potato fritters.

Equipment

  • Parchment paper
  • Blender or food processor

Ingredients

  • 1 red bell pepper stalk, ribs and seeds removed, diced into 3-4 pieces
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 1 teaspoon olive oil
  • 1 cup cottage cheese
  • ¼ cup cream cheese
  • ½ teaspoon sweet paprika or ¼ teaspoon smoked paprika*
  • pinch salt
  • pinch black pepper

Instructions

  • Remove the ribs and seeds from your red bell pepper and cut into 3-4 pieces. Place on a lined baking tray and drizzle with a little olive oil. Roast for 30 minutes.
  • Once the bell peppers have had 15 minutes, add the garlic cloves (skins on) to the baking tray. Continue to roast the peppers and garlic for the remaining 15 minutes. Set aside to cool. Remove the garlic from their skins when cool enough to handle.
  • Spoon the cottage cheese, cream cheese, roasted bell peppers, roasted garlic, paprika, salt and black pepper into your blender or food processor. Blend to a thick smooth dip!

Notes

*I suggest that my low histamine readers stick to sweet paprika rather than hot or smoked paprika, which is higher histamine.
  • Use plain, unflavored cottage cheese and cream cheese to make the dip.
  • Make sure to add the garlic cloves to the baking tray once the red peppers have had 15 minutes of cook time.
  • Adjust the amount of spice to taste. You can always add a little more if you like!

Swiss Interest Group Histamine Intolerance
All ingredients score 0 on the SIGHI list, with the exception of:
  • cream cheese, which scores 0. It has a note 'plain, without additives'.
  • cottage cheese isn't rated on the list, but is mentioned as being well tolerated on their histamine potential of food list.
  • garlic, which scores 1.
  • black pepper, which scores 2.
