💭 Why may you like no banana smoothie recipes?
Bananas, whether fresh or frozen, are often used to make smoothies as they give so much sweetness and easily thicken a smoothie recipe.
But of course you may not like the taste of bananas or haven't been to the store to pick some up, but want to blend up a smoothie!
It's also the case that some people are allergic to bananas or have a food intolerance to them. Bananas are a high histamine food (per the SIGHI list), so people with conditions such as histamine intolerance or mast cell activation syndrome may be advised to avoid them and stick to low histamine recipes by their doctor or dietician.
📖 How can I make thick smoothie recipes without bananas?
Thick creamy smoothies always feel a little indulgent, and like such a treat. But how can we thicken a smoothie without bananas? There are quite a few ways to blend up a thick smoothie, with vegetarian and vegan options to try:
Frozen fruit
Adding frozen fruit rather than fresh fruit gives you a much thicker smoothies. So grab your frozen berries, mango or peach slices and add them to your blender to make a tasty drink!
Frozen cauliflower
Frozen cauliflower rice (or a small piece of frozen cauliflower) also helps thicken smoothies without bananas. I suggest to use a small amount with flavorful sweet fruits to help mask the cauliflower taste!
Yogurt
Yogurt is a very typical way to blend up a thick creamy smoothie, and you can use regular Greek yogurt or a coconut yogurt.
However, my low histamine readers may want to skip using yogurt as it is usually considered a higher histamine food and have a read of my post on yogurt alternatives for smoothies for other ideas!
Nut or seed butter
Whether almond butter, macadamia nut butter, pumpkin seeds butter or another type works for you, a nut butter or seed butter gives a hearty taste and thick smoothie.
Have a peek at my post on almond butter substitutes if you need some more nut or seed butter ideas! And my low histamine nuts and seeds guide should be helpful too!
Oatmeal
Oatmeal is such a good way to make a smoothie more hearty, and most of us have this pantry staple to hand. I use it in my apple pear smoothie to get it nice and creamy in taste and texture!
Chia seeds, hemp seeds or flaxseeds
Chia seeds and flaxseed absorb liquids and so swell up a little to make a smoothie thicker, and hemp seeds are so creamy when blended up, such as in my fun hemp smoothie! All fairly easy to find in stores, just don't add too much to your smoothie or it can give you an overly 'earthy' taste!
For more nut and seed ideas, my hemp seeds substitutes and flaxseed substitutes posts have lots of foods that work well as alternatives!
